What is Tally?-Tally.ERP 9 is an enterprise resource planning (ERP)
software developed by Tally Solutions Pvt Ltd, headquartered in Bangalore,
Karnataka India. Tally.ERP 9 software serves more than 2 million users across
the globe. Tally.ERP 9 is the main product of Tally Solutions Pvt. Ltd,
co-founded by Shyam Sunder Goenka and his son Bharat Goenka.
Purpose-
Tally.ERP 9 is a windows-based ERP software. The software handles Accounting, Inventory Management, Order Management,
Tax Management, Payroll, Banking and many such requirements of
the business. It supports all day-to-day processes from recording invoices to
generating various MIS reports.
Features of Tally
1. Tally
ERP 9 supports multi languages, so it’s called as multi-lingual tally software.
Accounts can be maintained in one language and reports can be viewed in another
language.
2. You
can create and maintain accounts up to 99,999 companies.
3. Using
payroll feature, you can automate employee records management.
4. Tally
has feature of synchronization, the transactions maintained in multiple
locations offices can be automatically updated.
5. Generate
consolidated financial statements as per requirements of company.

Versions of Tally
- Tally 3.0:Tally released this version in
1990 wherein it supported only Basic Accounting needs of small businesses.
This version only run on Microsoft DOS.
- Tally 3.12: Established in 1991, this
version of Tally focused on the basics of accounting somewhat similar to
version 3.0.
- Tally 4:1992 was the year for version
4 of Tally. Like its predecessors, it also supported DOS based accounting.
- Tally 4.5:Tally released this version in
1994 which ran on MS-DOS and focused on financial accounting system. This
version focused on accounting activities such as Ledgers Classification
Vouchers Entry.
- Tally 5:The year was 1996 when Tally
released its upgraded version to Tally 4.5 working on Windows operating
system. This version comprised of inventory modules which involved
detailed inventory, structure invoicing and integrating accounting and
inventory records.
- Tally 5.4:This version released in 1996
was an enhanced module over its earlier 5.0 version. It had the capacity
of importing of data facility.
- Tally 6.3:Released in 2001, this version
was an extension of enterprise systems wherein it interacted with other
system through Open Data Base Connectivity.
- Tally 7.2:This version released a decade
ago in 2005. It’s an integrated enterprise system which provides various
types of taxes such as TDS, VAT & TCS along with Service Tax modules
- Tally 8.1:Released in 2006, this version
is a software that supports multi languages. It supports 10 languages.
- Tally 9:Released in 2006, this is an
enhanced version over the earlier 8.1. It supports 13 languages, including
foreign ones and also includes Payroll, POS (Point of Sales).
- Tally ERP 9:This is the latest version
released in 2009 which is a complete business solution. This version
offers different features such as remote access, much commanding data
security, tally.net and several more.

This Version is launched in July 17 when GST has been launched on that
time.
